POPULAR YOUNG LADY IS DEAD
The entire village was shocked to hear on last Sunday of the death
of one our most popular young people, Mona Root. Though it had been
known that she had not been strong for some time, no serious
apprehension had been felt. Her death occurred in the Sacred Heart
Hospital at Eau Claire and took place last Sunday at 1:30 p.m. She
had been operated on just three days before, but apparently the
shock was too much for her. Her parents were called to her bedside
and all was done that was possible, but to not available.
Mona Isabel Root was born in Fox Lake, Wis, Aug. 1, 1893 and died
at Eau Claire, Dec. 17, 1916, aged 23 years, 4 months and 17 days.
She was born in the Root homestead, now the property of Mr. and
Mrs. Arch Handy. She was a pupil in our Public Schools, graduating
from High School with the class of 1911, and is the first of the
class to pass away. After leaving school her Mona spent two years
at the Oshkosh Norman School and graduated from the Stevens Point
Normal. She taught school at various points and was teaching at the
time of her death (Granton and Greenwood, Clark County). She was
very ambitious and persevered in her work in spite of ill health,
being one who never complained. While not a member of the
denomination, she had always been an attendant of the Baptist
Church at Fox Lake and wherever she was teaching. She was one of
the first members of Near and Farther Lights, organized by Mrs.
Roberts during the pastorate of Elder Roberts. Her Bible shows
notes and under linings that she had been a student of the Bible. A
girl of fine moral character, generous to a fault though high
spirited, she will have a place in the remembrance of a large
circle of friends.
She leaves to mourn her untimely decease,
a father, mother and sister, all of Fox Lake. The funeral services
were held from the family residence on Wednesday afternoon, Elder
Brown of the Baptist Church officiating. A large number of friends
attended the services, those from out of town being Mrs. B. J.
Anderson and son of Richmond, Ind., Mrs. Alfred Grubb, Marshall,
Wis, Mr. Lloyd Call, Marshall, Wis., Miss Mae Gilbert, Horicon,
Wis., and Chas. Helbing, Beaver Dam, Wis. (Fox Lake
Representative)
