OBITUARY MENTION

Vernard Rue Sperbeck, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Sperbeck, whose sudden death was mentioned briefly in the last issue, was born Sept. 30, 1889, in Spirit Lake, Iowa, he coming to Greenwood with his parents about four years ago. He was naturally a bright lad and full of the inventive genius common to many boys of his disposition. He was thoroughly original in his manner and methods, yet quiet so far as vocal expression was concerned, seldom saying more than was absolutely necessary. Vernart was best known to the public on account of his trapeze and show business, which he and Emil Drummond conducted together, in boyish fashion, but always to the pleasure of those who knew the lads.

Two weeks ago Sunday Vernard was complaining of a sick headache, which he frequently had and which was the only sickness he ever had. Monday this continued and his parents called in the doctor, who after a day or so pronounced the case one of tonsillitis. Thursday the boy was worse and Dr. T. F. Conroy was called to consult with Dr. Schofield and the disease was found to be diphtheria. He was treated accordingly with the best treatment known for such cases and everything seemed hopeful for a safe recovery until Wednesday afternoon. The malady was overcome and the patient was in a fair way for recovery, but during the afternoon he grew worse, his vitality being very low from the debilitating effects of the disease so much that his heart action was weak. Dr. Kennedy who took charge of the case upon Dr. Schofield's departure for a coulple of weeks' rest, remained with the patient constantly throughout Wednesday night and Thursday until death called the lad from the earth.

The blow is a peculiarly had one for the parents and the only sister, and their affliction is shared by a host of friends. The last rites in memory of the lad were held at the home Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, Revs. Faris and Hendren officiating.

Those present to attend the funeral from away were H. C. Sperbeck and daughter Loretta of New Richmond, Mr. and Mr. L. Sperbeck of Medford and Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Gibson of Longwood.
