WILBUR STEWART


Wilbur Ashley Stewart, 94, Greenwood, Clark County, died Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, at Memorial Home, Neillsville. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, 1996, at Grace Methodist Church, Greenwood.


Wilbur Ashley Stewart was born on Feb. 15, 1902, to Michael and Hannah (nee Krucker) Stewart, near Ipswich, S.D. His family moved to Wisconsin soon after his birth. He attended the Abbotsford High School, graduating in 1920. He married Velma Looker on June 3, 1925. They owned and ran the Redville General Store north of Withee from 1923 until 1945. During the years of WW II, he was asked to assist his brother Arthur in the Redville Cheese Factory. The cheese business moved to Greenwood in late 1945. Wilbur and family moved to Greenwood, where he joined brothers Arthur and Robert and fellow worker, Harlan Brux, in developing the Stewart Cheese Corp. The corporation won the national championship for the excellent quality of their American cheddar for the years of 1948 and 1949. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church of Greenwood, the Greenwood Rotary Club, the Greenwood City Council and later served as the mayor during the 1970 s. He also served as Maplehurst Town Treasurer for many years.


Survivors include two daughters, Joyce (Robert) Van Keuren, Wooster, Ohio and Mary (Everett) Humke, Rochester, Minn. one son, Dr. Kenton Stewart, Buffalo, N.Y. one brother, Oral Stewart, Milwaukee eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma his parents two brothers, Robert and Arthur and two sisters, Hazel and Mayme.
Memorial may be given to the Grace Methodist Church.


The Cremation Society of Wisconsin assisted the family with arrangements.
