CENTENARIAN BURIED AT LOYAL TUESDAY

ELIZABETH WELCH, OLDEST NATIVE BORN MOTHER IN STATE, PASSES

 (by News-Herald Correspondent)

Loyal, Dec. 19--Funeral services were held here yesterday for Mrs. Elizabeth WELCH, 101 who died Saturday, after a short illness. Rites were conducted at the Welch home, northeast of the village, by the Rev. A. N. CHAPMAN, and burial took place in Pine Grove cemetery, near the home.

Pallbearers were O. J. SMITH, Archie SMITH, Ralph PHILPOTT, Dan BUCHOLZ, Albert DAVEL, and Ralph CLEMETSON.

Mrs. WELCH was the mother of 13 children, of whom the following seven survive: Grant, George and John, Mrs. Will CATLIN, Mrs. Mary VETTER, Mrs. Rhoda FLAHERTY and Mrs. Carrie TEMLINSON. Other surviving relatives include 41 grandchildren, over 100 great grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren.

Born in New York State on Oct. 30, 1833, Elizabeth NIVER came to Wisconsin with her parents in 1845. They settled in Dodge county where she was married in 1851 to William Welch. Twelve years later the couple came to Clark county, which remained their home.

It was Mrs. Welch's habit for many years to entertain relatives and old friends at a chicken pie dinner at her home on her birthday anniversary and she continued this practice to the last year of her life, presiding at such an event just, six weeks before her death, and making all the plans for the event herself.

Two years ago Mrs. Welch was reported by the Wisconsin Federation of Woman's Clubs as the oldest American born mother in the state, and was presented with a certificate of membership in the Federation.
