HENRY HAWKS PASSES AWAY
Henry Hawks died at his home in this city Thursday, Dec. 21, 1933, at 2:30 a.m. as a result of a
hemorrhage. Mr. Hawks just recently returned from St. Joseph's Hospital, Marshfield, where his left leg was amputated because of gangrene.
Mr. Hawks was born in Neillsville, Clark County April 9, 1860, and was therefore 73 years, 8 months and 12 days of age at the time of his death. He held the distinction of being the first white child born in Neillsville.
Deceased was a son of Richard Hawks and Mary Murphy. On Aug. 21, 1883, he was united in marriage to Miss Addie Bortle. The wedding took place at Neillsville and the ceremony was performed by Rev. W. T. Hendren.
The couple resided in Neillsville for a time and then went to Frankfort, S.D., where they remained for fourteen years. They then returned to Neillsville and in 1929 came to Greenwood, where he resided until his death.
Mr. Hawks is survived by his wife. They had no children.
The body lay in state at the Chiller funeral Home here until 1 p.m. Saturday, when it was taken to the Schiller Funeral Home at Neillsville, where Rev. G. W. Longenecker conducted services at 2:00 p.m. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery.
Those from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bortle and family of Eau Claire, Mrs. Baker of Wheeler, Wis., and Mrs. Rankin of Rice Lake.
