Storm Cuts 100 Foot Swath at Bement ; Central Illinois Suffers

DECATUR, June 5 — Extensive property damage was done to farm buildings between Bement and Milmine, IL, about 16 miles east of here, late this afternoon by a small tornado which formed east of Milmine and swept east through Piatt county. There was no loss of life. The tornado was followed immediately by a heavy rain and two hours later by a downpour which flooded basements and drenched fields. The tornado disappeared east of Bement. The funnel shaped cloud, towering about 500 feet in the air, formed east of Milmine, after a hot, sultry afternoon, and swept cast at the rate of 20 miles an hour. The disturbance followed a course parallel to the Wabash railroad between Milmine and Bement, and moving in a northeasterly direction left a swath of wreckage about 100 feet wide.

I. T. S. Poles Down

Near Bement, it did the greatest damage. Poles of the Illinois Traction System near Bement were laid flat. The brick home of Joseph Broucher, living near Bement. was wrecked by the storm. Lightening following the cyclone, struck the big barn on his place which had been unroofed by the tornado, and set fire to it. Freaks of the storm were plentiful. At the Broucher home, straws were found driven into trees to a depth of an inch and a half. Mrs. L. L. Bouyer and two daughters, living near Bement. were returning home when the storm approached. They gained cover in their house only a few seconds before the storm struck. Near Bement. an automobile was caught in the storm and carried v over the J. T. S. tracks, a distance of about GOO feet .

Trains are being detoured over the Wabash to Lafayette, and thence to Indianapolis over the Monona railroad. All available work trains have been concentrated on this section in an effort to repair the damage.
