Christie, Charlie (1861 - 1875)
Last Monday, Charlie Christie, aged about 14 years, the son of a widow lady living about 4 miles North of this place (Neillsville, Clark County), committed suicide while under the influence of liquor, by shooting himself with a revolver. We have heard several stories relating to this sad transaction, but have been unable to determine just how much reliance can be placed on them further than that whiskey was the cause, and suicide the result.

Death of Little Charlie Christie
Last week, upon the best information received and then considered reliable, we reported the death of little Charlie Christie as "suicide." Since then we have learned that his death was purely accidental. The stories put in circulation, and by which we were misled, being wholly groundless and false in every respect. He was never known to touch a drop of liquor, nor was there any other ground upon which to base the conclusion that he had taken his own life; and the stories put in circulation to that effect doubtless originated in the mind of some evil disposed person who sought to injure the feelings and reputation of those who were called to mourn this sad misfortune and untimely death. The morning of the accident, he was unusually lively, and had made several calls in the neighborhood. He finally stated to his mother that he was going hunting, and taking a revolver started out for that purpose. Shortly after he had gone, his mother hearing the report of the revolver looked out and saw him fall lifeless to the ground, the ball having entered his left side, just below the ribs, passing upward through the heart and lungs coming out on the right shoulder. Just how the accident occurred will never be known, but it was probably caused by dropping the revolver to the ground, and its being discharged by the fall. Charlie was a bright, brave, intelligent little fellow, and his unfortunate death is deeply regretted. His remains were followed to their last resting place the day succeeding his death by the sympathizing friends and neighbors of the afflicted family. Though conscious of not having done so intentionally, we cannot blame the friends of the family for censuring us for having added to their sorrow by publishing a statement so unjust and unfounded, and we cannot induce any person however mean or revengeful, to take that method of obtaining satisfaction. Deeply regretting the part we unwittingly took in giving publicity to the heartless fabrication of the enemies of our friends, we hope that all who have repeated the statement made in last week's PRESS, on the strength of that article, will have the kindness to correct the report by giving the true facts as published to-day.
