Metcalf, James (1884 - 1964)


GREENWOOD--James Metcalf, 80, Greenwood, Clark County, died of a heart attack at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, 1964, at his home. He has been in poor health for the past two years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Zion United Church of Christ in Greenwood. The Rev. Orval Egbert will officiate, and burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
The body will repose at the Hill Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Monday, when it will be taken to the church.


James Metcalf was born Feb. 3, 1884, in Melrose, and as a young boy came with his parents to Clark County. He received his education in the Melrose and Clark County Schools. His marriage to Clara Vollrath took place Oct. 20, 1907, at Hayward.


The couple lived at Hayward until 1910, when they moved to a farm 12 miles northwest of Greenwood. In 1952, he retired and moved to the city of Greenwood. During the summer months for 10 years he had worked as a guide at a resort in Hayward.


Mr. Metcalf was director of the Oakland School District, president and director of the Greenwood Milk Co-operative, a member of the Conservation Club and the Zion United Church of Christ.


In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Le Roy Metcalf, Greenwood Everett Metcalf, Brookings, S.D. and Dale Metcalf, Random Lake a daughter, Mrs. Ben (Bertha) Dallman, Greenwood two brothers, Freeman Metcalf and William Metcalf, Hayward 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.
