FATHER PIUS
LEABEL
Father Pius (Arthur) Leabel, formerly of Loyal, Clark County, now residing at the Mater Dolorosa Monastery in Sierra Madre, Cal., died on Sept. 20, 1978, at a Pasadena hospital.
Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 23 at
Mater Dolorosa Monastery in Sirra Madre, Cal. Burial was in the
moastery cemetery.
Father Pius Leabel was born in Loyal on April 13, 1899, to Sam and
Susan Leabel.
He was a member of the first graduating class of St. Anthony's
Grade School in 1913. In the fall of 1913, he entered the Mt.
Calvary Minor Seminary. He was a graduate of St. Lawrence College,
Mt. Calvary. He obtained his training in philosophy and theology in
St. Louis and Cincinnati. He received his master's degree at De
Paul University, Chicago and had done postgraduate work at the
University of Detroit, the University of Chicago and Catholic
University in Washington, D.C.
Father Leabel originated the first workshops in the Los Angeles
archdiocese and demonstrated workshop techniques at both the Denver
and Boston conventions of the Homiletic Society and conducted
workshops in Chicago, Mt. Angel, Ore. And Wichita, Kan. He, for
almost 40 years, taught newly ordained priest and conducted a (the
