Stauner, John J. (1923 - 2001)
John J. Stauner, 77, town of Mead, died on
Friday, Feb. 2, 2001, at his home. Funeral services were held at 11
a.m., on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Willard.
The Rev. Joseph Follmar officiated. Burial was in the Willard
Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Wallis-Hinker
American Legion Post 238 of Greenwood. Pallbearers were Ben Riker,
Terra Schultz, Quentin Denzine, Joel Ovyn, Mike Vetterkind and
Terrie Bena.
John Joseph Stauner was born on June 1, 1923, in the town of
Medford, to Joseph and Susan (nee Kellner) Stauner. He attended
Holy rosary School in Medford. He served 11 years in the U.S. Army
during and after WWII. During the war, he served in Africa, Sicily,
Italy, and Austria. After the war, he served in the South Pacific
and at various bases in the U.S. He married Margaret Klemm on May
28, 1953, in Whittlesey. They farmed in the town of Greenwood,
Taylor County, for seven years. In 1962, they moved to Marshfield,
where he was employed at Weyerhaeuser. He retired in 1985 after 23
years. They resided at Mead Lake since his retirement. He was a
member of the Wallis-Hinker American Legion Post 238 in Greenwood.
In 1999, his family honored his military service with the placement
of a legacy stone at the Highround Memorial, Neillsville. He
enjoyed many outdoor activities, including gardening and fishing.
He was an avid Packer fan for more than 60 years. He took special
pride in the achievements of his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Stauner, Mead Lake one
daughter, Mary (Terry) Schultz, Withee two sons, Robert (Rose)
Stauner, Huntsville, Ala., and John (Nora) Stauner, Wis. Rapids his
grandchildren, Joline Moorman and Brian Stauner, Alabama, Stephanie
(Quentin) Denzine, Cindy Schultz, and Terra Schultz, Medford,
Benjamin Riker, Chris Stauner, and Sarah Stauner, Wis. Rapids four
great-grandchildren six sisters, Minnie Reynolds, Baraga, Mich.,
Agnes (Ray) Carstenson, Medford, Catherine Dassow, Whittlesey,
Christy (Manny) Gilles, Medford, Mary (Ervin) Dassow, Medford, and
Theresa Koutrelakos, Winthrop, Maine and one brother, Alvin
(Lillian) Stauner, Medford.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Gunner Denzine one
sister, Florence Broeske and four brothers, Joseph, Lawrence,
Herbert, and Albert Stauner, and two more brother in infancy.
Cuddie Funeral Home, Greenwood, assisted the family with
arrangements.
