M. Francis Coats was born in 1827 in Alleghany Co. PA.  He fought as a Pvt. in Co. D, 11th WI.  He and his wife, Eleanor (b. 1828, PA) were farming in Eaton Twp., Clark Co., WI when the 1880 Census was taken. At that time, their household consisted of their sons: Benjamin (b. 1856) and Elijah (b. 1867); daughters: Eliza Coats (b. 1867, twin of Elijah) and Anna Greenfield (b. 1854); granddaughters: Martha Rigsby (b. 1873), Lydia Davis (b. 1876) and R. Palley Haney (b. 1871).  Mary Coats was living in the next household and 26 Sep 1880, she married Patterson Christie who was also engaged in farming.
