Phillip P. Howard
Greenwood, Eaton, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Phillip was born 1836 in France to George and Magdalena Howard. He fought as a Pvt. with Co H, 32nd Wis., Inf. This Regiment was organized at Camp Randall, Madison, WI. He enlisted 14 Aug 1862 and mustered into service Dec 1862. The soldiers moved to Columbus, KY from 31 Jan to 2 Feb, 1863. Co. "H" detached to Memphis, TN, 12 May, then reunited with the regiment at Cairo, IL, 14 Aug and returned to WI, 16 Aug 1865 to be mustered out of service. His regiment lost 1 officer and 18 enlisted men by disease. Catherine Southard (b. 1840, d. Aug 1891) was Phillip’s first wife. They married 22 Mar 1868 and their children were: Clara Francis (b. 22 Apr 1871), Ella E (b. 28 Jul 1869, d. 8 Jan 1891) and Lily May (d. 19 Dec 1867). At the turn of the century, Phillip moved from his home in Medford, WI to the "Old Soldiers’ Home" in Waupaca, 11 Feb 1899. Rhoda Maria Olin, the former wife of George H. Keeler, AKA Geo. H. Clay, lived with Phillip as his wife after her husband deserted and enlisted with the Union Army in MI. Her second husband, Smith Hunter, died in MI. She and Phillip were not legally married because she was never divorced from her first husband. She was born 13 May 1840 in Newark, NY and had been admitted to the home 29 Dec 1897, as the wife of Clifford Olin. Her husband, George died at the Waupaca Veterans’ Home and is buried there. Phillip and Maria left the home in May 1910. Phillip died in Waupaca, WI, on 15 Jun 1918 and is buried in the Neillsville, WI City Cemetery.

"Old Soldiers' Home", Waupaca, WI.--Our records show Philip was admitted to the Wis. Veterans Home on Feb 11, 1899 from Medford, WI. He gave his age as 62 at the time of admission and indicated he had been born in France. He indicated he was not married at the time. Philip served in Company H of the 32nd Wis. Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted August 14, 1862 and was discharged June 12, 1865. He listed his former occupation as farmer. Somewhere along the line Philip married Maria Olin. Philip and Maria left the Wis. Veterans Home in May of 1910. We have no record of where they discharged to. Our records show Maria Olin was admitted to the WI Veterans Home on Dec. 29, 1897 from Waupaca as the wife of Clifford Olin. Clifford passed away on June 7, 1901. Maria listed her date of birth as May 13, 1840, in Newark, New York. Gretchen Jungerbert
