George W. Slater
Greenwood, Eaton, Clark Co., Wisconsin
George was born Aug 1843 in Cayuga Co., NY, the son of William and Eliza Slater. On 27 Aug 1861 at Marseilles, IL, he enlisted as Private, joining Co. K, 39th Inf. Ill. in October. He received a disability discharge 25 Sep 1862 after an accidental bayonet wound below his left ear, an injury resulting in deafness which troubled him throughout his life. On 20 Jan 1864 at Chicago, he enlisted as Private in Co. G / E, 8th Cav. Ill. He mustered out at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO, in 1865. On 24 SEP 1868, "George W. Slater of Hayton" married "Malinda E. Alldridge of Brillion" at Charlestown, Calumet Co., WI. She was the daughter of Alfred and Malinda E. Alldridge and was born 16 Jun 1851 in Bristol, VT. Rev. Luther E. Eldridge, the minister of the M. E. Church performed the ceremony.
At the time of the 1880 Census, they were living in Eaton Twp, Clark Co, WI with their children: George A. (1869-1951), Warren J. (1872-1921), Alice R. (1874-1943), and Maude Linda/Lulu (1880-1944). George’s 63 yr. old father (also a Civil War Veteran) was living with them. Two more children, Frank (1887-1957) and William E. (1891-1936), were born to them before they moved to Laurel, WA.
The winter of 1886, George went to Chicago, but did not like it well enough to stay and returned to work in Farling’s Lumber Mill.
George died 5 Jul 1904 at Fairhaven, WA and was buried 3 days later at Bayview Cemetery, Bellingham, WA, by undertaker W. H. Mock. Malinda died 25 Nov 1919 and was buried beside her husband.

Marriage Record Details
Last Name: Rofiot First Name: Edgar Day: 01 Month: August Year: 1888
Last Name: Stoker First Name: Retty County: La Crosse Volume: 04 Page: 0040
Frank had a son named Edgar Francis who was born in Oct. 1869, so he is the right age for this. "Stoker" could be Slater and "Retty" could be "Betty" and Elizabeth is a Slater family name, but I can't match the age. George had a sister Elizabeth but she was born in 1848. We seem to have all of the middle names of George's daughters, but who knows. They would actually be too young anyway.
THIS is another unresolved thing:
There is a George Slater daughter named Lula M. in the 1880 census, age 4 m, born Jan.
There is a cemetery listing for "Lucy Slater" with Wm & Eliza, but no dates are shown. Melinda declares all 6 of her 6 children are living in the 1900 Census, but...
The online Slater Tree shows a George Slater's daughter Maude, born in Jan 1878, and I always assumed this was the same person as Lulu. The Tree does not give a married name for Maude, but shows a date of death as May 1944.
The original Bio for George lists a daughter "Maude Linda" born 13 Jan 1880. (I don't know where the "Linda" was picked up.) That matches the census "Lulu" information. Since the Tree also says Jan. but is 2 yrs earlier I guess I decided this is the same person. I can't really find any trace of her, so I don't know about the death date they give, although the info seems good overall.
