Howard Hamilton & Eliza Melissa (Coleman) Tompkins
Clark Co., Wisconsin
Howard was born 17 Oct 1847 in Volney, Oswego Co., NY, son of Alexander Hamilton and Martha (Coe) Tomkins. His siblings were: William H. (1842), Abigail M. (1844), Mary E. (1851), Francis M. (1852), Ruth C. (1856), Edwin M. (1858), Martha E. (1859) and Abram L. (1860). The family were pioneers in the Oswego area, a port town on Lake Ontario in north central NY. Alexander died 23 Feb 1861, when Howard was 14 yrs. old, leaving his mother Martha with a house full of young children, including an infant less than 6 mo. old. Three years later in the depth of winter, Howard said his goodbyes to his struggling family and went to Camden, NY where he enlisted as a Pvt. in Btry. G, 3rd NY L.A. He served from 22 Feb 1864 to 20 Jun 1865 when he was mustered out at David’s Island, NY Harbor. His company was commanded by Capt. David L. Aberdeen and was active at Wise’s Forks and Bennett house.
Eliza Melissa Coleman was born in Sussex, Eng. in 1847, and arrived in Hamilton NY with her parents when she was 6 yrs. old. She married Howard 8 Oct 1884 in Chicago, and the couple settled in Warner, Clark Co., WI, where their son Marcus H. was born, 19 Jul 1885. Howard had a property sale during Aug 1889 and traded his farm to L. O. Garrison for the Randall farm ½ mi. N. of Greenwood. Then, 21 Jul 1890 the Tompkins were granted a homestead at the Eau Claire Land Office for sec. 22, Butler Twp. This was in the midst of a Great Depression and the collapse of the American economy which hit the farm states such as WI the hardest. This was coupled with a period of unusually harsh weather, but the Tompkins made it through that first year on their homestead despite a whopping 72" snowfall for the season. The next winter they were not nearly so fortunate, but their problem wasn’t money or weather, it was the dreaded epidemic of Typhoid Fever that was sweeping the county to claim victims. Eliza was one of them and when her condition was complicated with pneumonia, she died 29 Jan 1892 and was buried in the Thorp Village Cemetery.
On 26 Jun 1900 Howard married his brother’s widow, Vianna (b. Sep 1860, IN), a mother of 5, in Clark Co., WI. The couple moved to OR before their daughter Laura was born in 1904. Howard worked as a Mail Carrier in Aumsville, and passed away 16 Mar 1928 in Klamath Falls, OR. His son Marcus also worked as a Mail Carrier, and he passed away 13 Feb 1962 in Tampa, FL.

Tompkins, Eliza C. (1846? - 29 JAN 1892)
At her home just north of the village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) limits, Mrs. Eliza C., wife of Howard H. Tompkins, died on Saturday morning last, of typhoid pneumonia, after an illness of eight days, aged 45 years. Mrs. Tompkins, whose maiden name was Eliza C. Coleman, was born in Sussex, England, and removed to Hamilton, N.Y. with her parents when six years of age, where she spent the greater portion of her life. In Oct. 1884 she was united in wedlock with Mr. Tompkins and they settled on a homestead in the town of Warner, Clark County, Wis, where they continued to reside until their removal here nearly two years ago. In early life she became a member of the Baptist Church and upon her removal here took a deep interest in church work, also teaching a Sunday school class and being an untiring worker in the ranks of the W. C. T. U. Always a good Christian, she passed quietly to rest in the arms of her Savior, her life work ended, her suffering past, for an eternity of happiness in heaven. She was devoted to her home circle and beloved for her extreme kindness to all by her every acquaintance. She leaves a husband and son, two sisters, one residing at Churchville, the other at Madison, N.Y., and a brother, George Coleman, of this place, to mourn her early demise. The interment took place on Monday afternoon from the Baptist Church, Rev. E. B. Edmunds officiating, the remains being followed to the Thorp Cemetery by a large concourse of sympathizing friends.
