James & Harriet Jane (Powers) Randall

James was born 6 Nov 1842 in Rutland, VT. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Unity, WI, having moved there as a young man. He was a Weston WI resident when he enlisted with the Union Army as a Pvt. in Co. B, 17th Infantry Regiment at La Crosse on 11 Oct 1864. He was mustered out 14 Jul 1865 at Louisville KY. On 20 June 1875 he married Harriett Jane Powers, daughter of Simon & Betsy Powers, at West Salem in La Crosse Co., WI. The couple raised 4 sons: James P., b. Jun 1877; Angus R., b. Oct 1880; Hugh L., b. Feb 1884; and Samuel H., b. Aug 1888. Harriett, who was born 21 Feb 1844 in Canada and moved to Elkhorn, WI with her parents at the age of 5. She passed away 14 May 1908. Her husband died 7 mos. later on 19 Dec 1908. Both were buried in the Beaver Twp. Cemetery, sec. 13, lot #26.

Randall, James (6 Nov. 1842 - 19 Dec. 1908)
James Randall, one of the old and most respected residents of the town of Unity passed away Saturday morning, Dec. 19th after an illness lasting only one week.
A slight cold he contracted a few weeks ago developed into pneumonia and his constitution was unable to withstand the ravages of that dread disease.
Mr. Randall was one of the pioneer settlers of this section having came here over thirty years ago and settled on a piece of land in the then wilderness, from which he has since carved one of the best farms in Clark county.
He was born in Rutland, Vermont, Nov. 6th 1842. He served with distinction during the civil war. In 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Harriett Powers whos (whose) death occurred May 2nd 1908.
He is survived by four sons; James, Hugh, Angel, and Samuel.
The funeral was held from the Beaver church Monday afternoon Dec. 21st with Rev. Householder officiated. Interment was made in the Beaver cemetery.

DEATH OF MRS. JAMES RANDALL
On Saturday May 2nd, 1908 occurred the death of Mrs. James Randall, one of the pioneer settlers of the town of Unity, Clark County. Death was due to heart disease, with which she has been afflicted for many years. The deceased was dearly loved by all who had the honor of her acquaintance.
Harriett J. Powers was born in Canada Feb. 21, 1844. She came to Wisconsin with her parents when about five years of age and located at Elkhorn, later removing to La Crosse. She was married to James Randall June 20, 1875 and came to Clark County the same year.
Besides her husband she is survived by four sons, James P., Anus R., Hugh L. and Samuel H., all but Hugh, who is in Washington, were present at the funeral. She also leaves two brothers, Samuel Powers of Chicago and H. H. Powers of Black River Falls.
The funeral was held from the Beaver Church Monday, Rev. G. W. Austin officiated. Interment was made in the Beaver Cemetery. The unusual large attendance at the funeral was evidence of the high esteem in which she was held by her neighbors and friends. (Unity Register)
