Christie, Weston, Clark Co., Wisconsin
Luther was born 5 Apr 1809, in Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, the son of Ebenezer and Eunice (Daniels) Raymond. The village of Manlius was settled in 1792-4. In 1817, Ebenezer purchased lot 57 in Manilius from Robert E. Troup in 1816 and a year later it was sold by the sheriff to John Raymond and he then bought lot 48 from Joshua Forman.
Luther married Julia Ann 5 Nov 1833. She was born 22 Oct 1817 in NY, the daughter of Philander and Betsey (Tichnor) Loomis. The children of Luther and Julia were: Eben Deloss (b. 19 Jul 1834), Charlotte Ann (b. 1 Jul 1840), and Floretta (b. 1847). They first located in Erie Co., NY and remained there until about 1843. The Raymonds then brought their family from New York to settle in the territory of Wisconsin in what is today Waukesha Co. Consequently, they were some of the first residents of Wisconsin when it became the 30th state, May 29, 1848. A year later, Luther was granted an 80 acre homestead claim of wild land, 1 Aug 1849 at the Land Office in Greenbay, WI, for Sec. 12 of Township 14-N, Range 18-E, Fond du Lac, Co. This property was developed into a productive farm. Unfortunately, Julia passed away 20 May 1863 in Campbellsport, WI, and was buried in the Union Cemetery. Not long afterward, Luther enlisted with the Union Army. He served with Co G, 39th Wis. Inf. after enlisting 28 May 1864 from Sheboygan, WI. He was mustered out 22 Sep 1864. In 1870, he moved with his family to a tract of wild land in Weston Township. When they first arrived, there was only a foot path to their home, and the Indians were numerous in the vicinity. It was a full 2 yrs. before their family even had a cow. By 1873, Luther was both farming and doing road work services including "chopping" along with Charles Kayhart, Jacob Demouth and Loren Gates. After being a widower for over 20 yrs., Luther died, 15 Dec 1883, and was buried in the East Weston Cemetery (now Chapel Hill).
