John Sanford

Greenwood, Eaton, Clark Co., Wisconsin

John was born during 1837 in PA.  He served as a Pvt. with Co. I, 76^th Penn. Inf. from 27 Aug 1863 to 18 Jul 1865, 1 yr., 11 mo. Afterward, he farmed in Sec. 8, Warner Twp., Clark Co. WI west of Greenwood. On the 1880 Census, he was listed as divorced and living with his bro., Ephraim, in (sec. 29) Warner, Twp.  The 1893 map of that twp. shows John’s own property in sec. 8. John was an active G.A.R. member and installed as Officer of the Guard, 27 Jan 1906. The next month, he and the Hemlock Miller, Joseph Palmer (whose biographical sketch also appears in this book) appeared before the pension examining board in Augusta to seek an increase in pension. An uncalled for letter addressed to John Sanford was noted in the 21 Mar 1889 Republican and Press Post Office Notices. The 1905 WI State Census listed him as a widowed boarder, living in Warner Twp. John was installed as an Officer of the Guard (O. G.) for the John A. Eaton Post Feb. 1, 1906 and probably went, sometime early that spring, to live the remainder of his life in the "Minnesota Soldiers Home" constructed in 1888, along with several support service buildings (infirmary, dining hall, ect.) near the Minneapolis airport.
