Charles & Sophia Roseman
Christie, Weston Twp., Clark Co., Wisconsin
"Carl" was born 8 Apr 1829 in Silesia, Ger. He fought with Co. B, 19th Wis., entering the service, 28 Feb 1864. He was wounded at Fair Oaks, VA, 27 Oct 1864 and he received an honorable discharge in the heat of summer, 9 Aug 1865. His first marriage to Eliza Gothe ended in divorce 30 Oct 1871 and she died in 1893. Albert Roseman (b. 9 Oct 1867 in Racine, WI) was Carl's son by this first marriage. The family story is that he wasn't being properly cared for by his mother who was living in Sparta and in 1871, Carl snatched him and moved nearly a hundred miles away to the woods of Clark County, WI. Carl’s second wife, Sophia Anna Maria Behrens, was born 9 Sep 1833 in Beidendorf, Mecklenburg, Ger., Province of Slagen, Prussia, the daughter of John J. & Elizabet Dorothea (Hameister) Kneiser. She and Carl married in Neillsville, WI, 12 Aug 1876. They moved to Sec. 3, Weston Twp., Clark Co. WI in 1879 along with the 76 yr. old mother-in-law, Louisa Edmizer. Sophia's children by her first marriage to Fred Behrens were: Frederick J., John H., Josephine "Josie", Otto, Georgena Johanna Mayta, William Gene and Alexander Ayres who was out of wedlock to "Josie" Behrens, but raised as her brother. In later years, Georgia remembered living in their large home in Milwaukee before her parents divorced in 1872. Her mother would apparently sprinkle gold dust in her hair to make it sparkle before driving off to parties with their horse and carriage. Albert left home at the age of 14 to cook for the performers on the circus trains, a career that took him all over the USA and even into Canada, Cuba and the Bahamas. He married Louise Profilio 27 Jun 1900. Carl and Sophie were admitted to the WI Veterans’ Home in Waupaca from Neillsville, 17 Aug 1918. Carl died there, 20 Apr 1921 and Sophia passed away the following year, 13 Oct 1922. They were buried in the Central WI Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Sec. 3, Lot 37, Graves 23 and 24.

To Whom It May Concern, Know Ye That Carl Roseman Has Been Honorably Discharged from The Service Of The United States. May Future Generations Never Forget The Debt Of Gratitude They Owe The Brave Boys In Blue Who On Land And Sea Volunteered Their Services During The Dark Days Of The Rebellion, Suffering and Bloodshed Which Marked The Years From 1861 to 1865 And May Our Motto Always Be "Liberty And Union, Now And Forever, One And Inseparable."
To all whom it may concern, know ye that CARL ROSEMAN enlisted from Racine, Wisconsin, February, 1862, and was mustered into the United States service at Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin, on the 24th day of February, 1862, as a private of Company "23" 19th Reg't. Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry under Capt. W. H. Tucker and Col. H. F. Sanders to serve three years or during the war. The Reg't was assigned to the First 23 Brigade Third Division Twenty Forth Corps. Army of the James. Discharged February 27th, 1864, at New Bern, N. C. on account of re enlistment.
Re enlisted February 28, 1864, as a private of Company "23" 19th Reg't Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Capt. G. G. Patton and Col. H. F. Sanders to serve three years or during the war. Participated in the following battles: Suffolk, Va., April 24, 1863; New Bern, N. C., February 1 - 4, 1864; Drewry's Bluff, Va., May 12 - 16, 1864; Port Walthall, Va., June 17, 1864; Siege Of Petersburg, Va., June 20 - September 20, 1864; Fair Oaks, Va., October 27, 1864; Richmond, Va., April 3, 1865, was wounded by a gunshot on the middle finger of the left hand at the Battle of Fair Oaks. He was honorably discharged August 9, 1865, at Richmond, Va. on account of the close of the war.

This design for a national monument was dedicated to The Grand Army of the Republic and kindred societies by Easel Monument Association and by them to be erected to the rank and file of the Union Army, October, AD ( "18" -? -Dictation unclear), 1898.

I was right about Grandpa Roseman's dual enlistment in the Civil War. He did enlist in 1862 for three years and although it doesn't give the details, was re-enlisted in 1864. The Union did that with their 1862 3 year enlistees in 1864 whose actual term wouldn't be up until 1865 to capture their grim determination and patriotism to see it through to the bloody end. Otherwise these men would have have had a tendency as the clock wound down in 64-65 to maybe hold back a little. Once they stepped forward and re-enlisted they realized they were in it until either they were killed or disabled or the end came. Tough, but that's the way it was. Carl was in fact wounded in the 2nd battle of Fair Oaks 3 April 1865 ( finger shot off, the bullet also from what I understand broke the stock on his rifle and further more he never left the field). He would not have been in uniform on the day he was wounded if he had not re-enlisted in 1864. God Damm I'm proud of him. Jerry Behrens MD, 3rdBn,9thMarines, 67-68

Family Notes
FILE: Notes from Correspondence by Judith Behrens (1/17/00) in Response to Questions About Great Grandpa Charles (Carl) Roseman
(See Excerpts of E-Mail Text Below)
"Great Grandma Roseman and Charlie are buried in Milwaukee, I think. They were in the King Soldier’s Home in Waupaca, Wisconsin (a home for Civil War Veterans), but I don’t think they are buried there.
Her father, Jochim was born in 1803 & died 1879 in Neillsville, Wisconsin. His wife, Elizabeth, was also born in 1803 & died in 1891 in Milwaukee.
You probably noticed Grandpa’s brothers John and Willie died in the same year (1872). John was shot by a policeman & Willie (still a little boy) died of small pox. You probably know the story of John, then a teenager: He came home late one night & tried to sneak in through window. A policeman saw him & thinking he was a burglar, yelled at him to halt. When John didn’t, the policeman shot him. It must have been very hard for Grandma Roseman to lose two sons in one year.
As I look at the dates of our Grandfather’s birth (1874) & his mother’s remarriage (1876), it would seem that Great Grandpa Roseman was the only father he ever really knew. That’s why we descendants have heard so much about Great Grandpa Roseman and so little of (the real) Great Grandpa Behrens. I never heard stories about why they divorced, so I don’t know the reason.
Josephine’s husband was Hank Mahar, i.e. one more "a." His dates are 1852 –1924.
Otto lived in Greenwood & was the father of Fred and Carroll. I remember Fred well, but don’t ever remember seeing Carroll. Cuddy was his son. I believe Carroll was an alcoholic, but haven’t heard of anyone else in the family who was. He may have died already before I was born (1935) or when I was still an infant. So Fred’s sons, Tom and Doug and, I suppose, their children, are the only Behrens’ in Greenwood anymore. Tom is 3 or 4 years older than I (or 5 years at the most). Doug was a few years older -- maybe another 4 years.
I remember Grandma Behrens (Agnes) talking about Loal Cummings when I was little, but never knew until not long ago that there was a family connection. The "Cummings house" (still called that when I was little) was on the same street as Louis’ and Alice’s, about 1 or 2 blocks closer to Main Street. Otto & Loal lived there - it had been her folks house.
Georgia, of course, was Terry’s great-grandma. She had 9 children. I met 2 of them in California when I was at Berkley & their children. Dad met one of them, Eula, and her husband, George, when he and Mom were there in ’59. George died a year later. Aileen was the other one that I met & her husband Jack. Eula and George lived in Oakland, which is right next to Berkley. They had 2 children, a son and daughter.
Georgia’s husband (last name: "Belore") was born 10/13/1859.
Grandpa Roseman was divorced from Eliza Gather (10/30/1871).
Divorce was said to be so much rarer in those days - but we have divorce on both sides of the family - both Sohpia and Charlie (Carl) on the Behrens side & Aiti and Asked on Mom’s side.
You probably remember the story that Grandpa Roseman considered Eliza an unfit mother & so kidnapped Albert out of his baby buggy in Black River Falls or somewhere around there and carried him walking all the way (up the Black River) to his folks farm (which was across the road from Hemlock School, Mom says)."
Charles Roseman is also featured in the book, "Civil War Soldiers in the heart of Clark Co., Wisconsin."
