William and Kate moved their family to Greenwood, Wisconsin in the fall of 1900 after purchasing the "Commercial House" which had been previously owned by Peter M. Stevens and rented by Edward McLaughlin, formerly of Fairchild. At the time, William was 59 yrs. old and Kate was forty-seven. They were the parents of 8 children and moved quite often, but seemed to do well. He was born March 18, 1841 in Highland, Madison Co., Illinois and his parents were born in VA and NC. He was a veteran of the Civil War who fought 3 yrs. with Co. E., 8th Ill. William undoubtedly enjoyed recalling the event with the veterans of the John A. Eaton G. A. R. Post. He'd married Mary at the onset of the war in 1861 and they were the parents of two sons, Albert (b. 1867, KY) and Edward (b. 1869, KY). In 1877, he married Catherine "Kate" Cannon who was born in Ireland (May 1853) and immigrated to the United States at the age of twelve. Their stay in Greenwood lasted only about a year, ending when they purchased a restaurant and confectionery business in Augusta, Wisconsin. The first few of their children was born in MO and the rest in WI. William died in Kansas around 1931 and shortly afterward Catherine applied for a Civil War widow's pension.
