Poppesch, August (4 AUG 1844 - 7 AUG 1906)

Last Tuesday afternoon about 3 o'clock August Poppesch, a well known farmer of the town of Holton, Marathon Co., committed suicide by taking three teaspoonfuls of paris green. He had been drinking some in the morning and told his wife to get him some whiskey about noon. She refused and about 4 o'clock he began complaining of a pain in his stomach. His wife asked him what was the matter, but he refused to say anything until about six o'clock, when he began roaring with pain. He admitted of having taken the poison. Dr. Crane was sent for at once, but when he arrived about 9 o'clock it was too late. He died at 9:45 in the evening in terrible agony. No reason is known why he committed the deed, although some say he has been somewhat mentally deranged for some time in the past. Although his conscience was very clear when the doctor arrived, and he begged to have his life saved, saying that he would never do it again should he recover.

The deceased was born in Mestick Silesia, Austria, Aug. 4th, 1844, being 62 years and 2 days old the day he died. He leaves a wife, two daughters, and one son to mourn his death. The remains were buried in the Union Cemetery, the Rev. Marks officiated. Their many friends extend their deepest sympathy for the bereaved family.
