Burpee, Adelia (6 Aug 1856 - 5 Aug 1897)

Mrs. Adelia Burpee died at her home in Christie, Clark County Thursday morning, Aug. 5, 1897, after an illness lasting nearly two years.

Mrs. Burpee was the daughter of S. V. Jones, who resides opposite Mr. Burpee's home in Christie. She was born in Essex County, N.Y., and came with her parents to Wisconsin in 1871, marrying Mr. Charles Burpee in 1878. They have but one child, a son Henry, aged 19 years, who still resides with his father.

Mrs. Burpee was taken ill a year ago last December, though her illness was not thought of as a serious nature then, and in fact not until early last spring, when it was discovered that she had cancerous formations, for which she was operated upon last May and one breast removed. The thoughts of having a cancer so preyed upon her mind that she became mentally deranged, and at times would imagine that someone was after her to carry her away, and at such times was afraid even of her mother and husband, and would run from the house whenever they approached. Last week Monday evening, during one of these spells she went into the barn, climbed up to the gable window and jumped, a distance of about 25 feet to the ground, an account of which was mentioned in the PRESS last week. Evidently her intentions were to destroy herself, which later developments have gone to prove and that she had made all preparations for this final ending of her troubles on earth. Her mother saw her fall and ran to her side, when Mrs. Burpee raised up and ordered her to go back home. Probably the effects of this fall was what hastened her death.

Mrs. Burpee was a very good and quiet woman when herself, and a strong and faithful member of the M.E. Church a woman well liked for her goodness and gentleness.

The funeral occurred from the residence in Christie, Friday, Rev. Paul Hull of Greenwood officiating, and the remains were interred in the Neillsville Cemetery.
