Wepfer, William (1847 - 11 Oct 1899)
A telegram to Station Agent Whitcomb yesterday requested him to
notify the family of Wm. Wepfer, a German resident of the North
Side (Neillsville, Clark County), that he had been struck and
instantly killed by passenger train No. 3 on the Omaha road near
Augusta. Details of the terrible accident are not obtainable at
present.
Mr. Wepfer left here about two months ago to work for the Omaha
company as shoveler on the gravel train running out of Merrillan.
It is supposed that he unconsciously stepped too close to a passing
train and was struck by the engine, the telegram not stating that
he was run over by the cars. Undertaker Lowe left yesterday for the
scene of the accident and to bring the remains home. The body will
probably arrive today and funeral services be held tomorrow.
Mr. Wepfer was born in Switzerland in 1847, and came to America
when a young man. He was for a number of years a resident of
Pittsville, but in 1891 removed with his family to this city. He
was a shoemaker by trade, but did general work most of the time,
his health in later years not permitting him to follow indoor
labor. He leaves a wife and five children, the youngest of whom is
but a year old. Much sympathy is felt for the grief stricken
family.
