Babcock, Joseph (1879 - 24 Oct 1899)
Only meager details are obtainable of a frightful accident which
occurred Tuesday noon on the N.C. Foster railroad running from
Fairchild to Greenwood, Clark County, resulting in the death of
young Joseph Babcock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Babcock of this city. So
far as can be learned the boy was riding on a flat car and in some
manner lost his balance and fell beneath the wheels of the moving
train, which passed over his abdomen. The train was stopped as soon
as possible and the injured boy taken with all possible speed to
Greenwood, but medical assistance was of no avail, death ensuing an
hour after the accident.
Joseph Babcock was about twenty years of age and had been employed
by Otto Neverman on the ice wagon. Last summer he went to work for
the Omaha company on the gravel train but about the time William
Wepfer was killed he entered the employ of the Foster Company.
The body was brought here Tuesday evening and funeral services will
be held today.
