Sternitzky, Charles (5 MAY1832 - 12 Jan 1900)

Charles Sternitzky, one of the oldest settlers of Clark County, and a citizen universally respected by all, died suddenly last Friday, Jan. 12, 1900, while in Neillsville attending the session of the county board. For some time he had heart difficulty, but had gone about his usual business. On coming down to breakfast Friday morning he complained of not feeling well, and asked Mrs. Brooks, the landlady of the Merchants, if a light breakfast could be prepared for him. His request was complied with. Immediately after breakfast it was noticed that he was growing worse. He was placed in bed, physicians summoned and his family sent for. All that medical skill and kind hands could do was done, but he continued to sink and shortly after seven o'clock in the evening he passed away. The doctors state the cause of his death to be pneumonia.

Mr. Sternitzky was born in Germany and was sixty-seven years of age the 5th days of May, 1899. He came to Clark County and settled in Lynn about fort-seven years ago. While not a man who sought political honors, by general consent his counsel was sought in all local affairs of town and school district. He served for many terms on the county board, where his judgment was considered sound and his opinions carried great weight. The substantial independence and uprightness of his character stand as a perpetual lesson for younger generations and it will be many years before his influence in affairs of his neighborhood is lost. He leaves a wife and four grown up children who are married and settled close to the parental home.

The funeral was held from the residence in Lynn Monday afternoon, Rev. Gereke of the Granton Lutheran Church officiating. The large concourse of friends who assembled showed the esteem in which the deceased was held and the sympathy felt for the bereaved family.
