Howard, Robert (20 Sep 1829 - 11 Apr 1900)

Robert Howard, one of the oldest settlers of the town of Grant, Clark County, died at his home Wednesday evening, April 11, 1900, after a short sickness from pneumonia. Mr. Howard was born in Cambridgeshire, England, Sept. 20, 1829. He came to the United States at the age of twenty-two, and settled in the state of Ohio, afterwards removing to Illinois where he lived two years. He came to Clark County about forty-five years ago, and took up land in the town of Grant. This whole region was a wilderness at that time, and he with other pioneers cut their roads through the woods. From primitive beginnings, he saw this county grow into civilization, and lived to enjoy the advantages he had taken a prominent part in developing. He was one of that class of hard working pioneers who have made this country a pleasant land. Slowly, one b one they are dropping away and the succeeding generations who enjoy the fruits of their toils and sacrifices should not soon forget them.

Mr. Howard was married in Chicago at the age of twenty-six. Three sons, John, George and Leonard, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Blackman and Miss Racie survive him. One child died in infancy. His first wife died about eighteen years ago, and last May he was again married to Mrs. Pope of the town of Grant, who is still living. The funeral was held at the Pleasant Ridge Church Saturday afternoon, Rev. G. W. Luther officiating.
