Neff, Albertus L. (1821 - 24 Jun 1900)
Albertus L. Neff,
one of the oldest settlers in the town of Levis, Clark County, died
at his home in that town a little past midnight Saturday night. Mr.
Neff was born in the state of New York and was about seventy-nine
years of age. On coming west he settled in Jefferson County and
about thirty-five years ago he removed to this county, settling in
the locality where he died. He was highly spoken of by all his
neighbors and was considered a good man and a good citizen.
He leaves three children, Mrs. Addie Holiday, formerly County
Superintendent of Schools of this county, Miss Angie Neff, late
city librarian of Duluth and Dorr Neff, one of the leading farmers
of the town of Levis.
The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the residence, Rev. Jos.
Brown officiating.
Family Notes:
Alburtis was the son of Isaac and Polly (Black) Neff. Oct. 10, 1844, he married Mary Roxy, the daughter of Justin and Zelinda Babcock. Their son, Charles J. Neff, born Feb. 1849, was killed in the Civil War during the battle of Petersberg in 1864. A second son, Dorr Alburtis, was born in June of 1851. After his mother passed away, he resided with his uncle, William Babcock until he joined his father in Levis Township, Clark Co., WI during the fall of 1868. Their daughter, Addie Olivia, born the 12th of August, 1856, spent two winters teaching in a country school while attending high school in Neillsville. In 1877, she attended the River Falls Normal School. From 1878-1880, she taught in the Neillsville Grade School and from 1885-1889, served as Clark County Superintendent of Schools. Aug. 17, 1896, she married Courtland Cook. Angie Neff, born June 19, 1859, was also a graduate of River Falls Normal School, receiving her diploma in 1885. She taught in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until becoming the bookkeeper for the S. M. Rice Store in Mass. In 1889, she made her home in Duluth, Minnesota and worked as a librarian at the public library.
Alburtis married a second time in November of 1867. He and his second wife, Isabelle Short, purchased a farm in Levis Township where Alburtis died. He and Isabelle didn't have any children together.
