Bancroft, Francis D. (22 Feb 1822 - 21 Sep
1900)
Francis D. Bancroft died at the home of his son-in-law, John
Wildish, last Friday of typhoid fever, aged 78 years. He was born
in New York Feb. 22, 1822, came to Milwaukee in 1836 and two years
later went to Menomonie Falls. He was married to Miss Laura
Thurston of N.Y., Oct. 2, 1846, who died in 1860. Five children,
three of whom survive him, were born to them. Four years later he
was united in marriage to Elizabeth Bender to whom four children
were born, two now living. During the past year or son he has been
an invalid, and with old age weakening his once sturdy frame, the
progress of the disease was swift and sure. He was a pleasant man
to meet, and during his declining years his time was devoted to
doing good and lightening the burden of those around him. His
friends were many and the esteem in which he was held by the
community was evidenced by the large assemblage of friends who
gathered to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the house, Rev.
Longenecker officiating. The remains were interred in the Grant
Cemetery.
