LEE MATHEWS (1909 - 1994)
Lee H. Mathews, 85, former Greenwood, Clark
County resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 1994, at Fairhaven
Residential Facility, Whitewater. Graveside services were held at
Lakeview Cemetery, Ft. Atkinson, on Saturday, Dec. 17, 1994, at 10
a.m. Rev. N. Kendell Nordstrom officiated. Military honors were
performed.
He was born in Farmington, Wis., to Milton D. and Jennie (nee
Howard) Mathews, on Oct. 19, 1909. He married Isabelle Klement on
June 14, 1947, in Ft. Atkinson. She survives. He graduated from
Whitewater City High School in 1927. He received his B. E. Degree
from Whitewater State Teachers College in 1931. And taught at
Greenwood, completing his graduate work at UW-Madison, and then
received his Masters Degree in 1936 and Ph.D. in 1939. After
completing graduate work at UW-Madison, he was in charge of a
Rockefeller Foundation Radio Exchange Project at WHA Madison. The
National Congregational Church Board appointed him to take charge
as a Student Minister of small churches in Nekoma, N.D., on summer
and at Big Piney, Pinedale, and Boulder, Wyo., during his college
years. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. In World War II, in the
Mediterranean area.
Survivors include his wife, Isabelle, Whitewater nieces and
nephews.
