EDWARD SMITH (1830 - 1907)
In the death of Edward Smith, which occurred Jan. 29, 1907, at
Withee, Clark County, following but a few hours of illness, there
went from the stage of human endeavor one of the old and familiar
faces of Clark County. Mr. Smith was born in England, in 1830 and
came with his parents to America in infancy. Beginning as cabin
boy, on the great lakes, he rose to the rank of captain, and was
captain of thirteen vessels. Coming to Clark County in 1879 he
settle at Christie, and the next year came to Greenwood. In 1881 he
moved to Longwood, where he ran a hotel until a few years ago, when
he went to Withee, where he had since been living in
retirement.
