Charles Suda Farm Fire (27 January 1966)
Eight calves and seven brood sows were among the items saved when fire destroyed a 48 by 28 frame pig barn on the Charles Suda farm, three miles northeast of Greenwood, last Sunday afternoon.
Also saved by two neighbors, Kenneth Verhulst and Leslie Johnson was a tractor and manure spreader kept in the barn.
The fire was discovered by the Johnson’s about 4 p.m., when they noticed smoke coming from the building. They called Mrs. Suda, who turned the alarm in by telephone to the Greenwood area fire department. Johnson and Verhulst drove the heifers and sows from the building before the fire truck arrived. They are being sheltered at various neighbors’ farms in the area.
Damage was placed at approximately $5,000 and is partially covered by insurance. Cause of the blaze has not been determined.
