Nozar, James, Jr. (Outstanding Young Farmer Award - 1966)
James Nozar, Jr., of the Christie area probably is better known among area residents as an outstanding athlete.
But now he has proof that he is an outstanding young farmer, as well. And, take the word of his agriculture instructor at Neillsville High School, the latter recognition is well-deserved.
Jim, a senior who recently competed in the state wrestling tournament sponsored by the WIAA, received the award from a commercial feed concern of national scope for "outstanding achievement in the development of a farming program and participation in school and civic activities."
Jim, who rated all-conference mention as a fullback in football, is one of the busiest young men at Neillsville High School. In addition to his athletic endeavors and his studies, he is the principal reliance on a 120 acre farm northeast of Neillsville operated jointly by himself and his mother, Mrs. James Nozar, Sr.
They have a herd of 25 high grade milk cows and 15 head of young stock. Last year the heard averaged 205 pounds of butterfat, actual, corrected to 264 pounds on an age basis - and its better this year.
Jim operates the farm on a labor-sharing basis with his mother. His farming program, sandwiched in with his considerable school activities includes operation of the entire farm, plus the sole ownership of six cows, eight head of young stock, and a small percentage of investment interest in the farm.
Quast, who has worked closely with young Nozar since he came to Neillsville as a teacher (he also is a graduate of NHS), is as proud of Jim as his dad would be, were he still here. His father died a couple years ago after being stricken by a heart attack.
"He’s one of the finest young men I’ve known," says Quast.
