Costello, Patrick E. (30 AUG 1890 - 10 NOV 1960)
Funeral services were held on Monday, Nov. 14 at the Thorp Funeral Home for
Patrick Edward Costello, who passed away on Thursday, Nov. 10, 1960, at Victory
Memorial Hospital at Stanley after a lingering illness. Rev. Cecil Ward of the
local Methodist Church conducted the 10:30 a.m. services, and interment was in
East Thorp Cemetery. Mr.
Costello was born at Salisbury, Conn. on Aug. 30, 1890, moving early in his
youth to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. It was there that he was first employed in a
newspaper office, and learned the printer’s trade which he followed during his
entire working career. He was employed briefly in New York City and Pittsburg,
Pa. as a composition and pressman, on newspaper, then moved to Chicago, where he
spent more than thirty years with the firm of R.R. Donnelley and Sons, one of
the largest publishing houses in the world. There he worked in various
capacities, a pressman, instructor to apprentices, foreman, and head foreman in
the press department. He was among those who did pioneer work there in the
color printing process, both on the four color and the huge ten color presses.
At the time of his retirement he was engaged in research work, seeking
improvements in the making and treating of plates. A son, John, is also
employed by the same firm as an engraver in the roto-graver section. On
July 6, 1951, Mr. Costello was married to the former Esther Kronberg of Thorp
(Clark Co., Wis.). Since his retirement in 1955, they made their home
alternately here and in Chciago. Besides his widow, Mr. Costello leaves two
sons, John and William by a previous marriage, and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Schultze, Milburn Haas, Hugo Roesler, Adolph Koltis,
William Ramer, and Gust Yahn. Out
of town relatives and friends in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs.
John Costello and family of Markham, Ill., Mrs. Linda Raynor of Milwaukee; Miss
Eva Kronberg of Cumberland, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Matt Kastomiatsky and Mrs.
Lillian Ulrich of Eau Claire, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Ciolkosz of Chippewa Falls,
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hanson, Mrs. Charles, Caldwell and children of Spencer, Mr.
and Mrs. Ted Schultze, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Haas, Mr. and Mrs. Milburn Haas and
