Thompson, Silas (26 OCT 1898 - 20 MAR 1961)

Silas Thompson, 63, Stanley businessman, took his own life about 1 p.m. Monday.

He used a broken broom handle to fire a 12-gauge shotgun blast into his head as he sat in his oil truck outside the family home, Chippewa County Coroner Dr. Clifford T. Bowe said:

Mr. Thompson had been in business in Stanley for several years with Ed Bjornson.  They operated a filling station and also had a bulk oil business.

Mrs. Thompson was taken by ambulance to Victory Memorial Hospital where she is being treated for shock.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Plombon Funeral Home, the Rev. F.M. Selveson officiating.  Burial will be held in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Masonic services will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. tonight (Thursday).

Born in Kendal Co., Ill. Oct. 26, 1898, he went to the town of Delmar in 1916.  He served in France and Germany during W.W. 1.  He married the former Hannah Hagen.  They farmed in the Stanley area but for the past 25 years he had been in the oil business.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Ronald, Long Island, N.Y., and (?),  in the Army at Ft. Riley Kan.; two brothers, Harold, Jim Falls, and Tilmer of rural Stanley; two sisters, Mrs. Peter Larson, Long Beach, Calif. and Mrs. W.W. Whitmore of Quincy, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
