Fred Haas Is
Killed Near Unity April 3
Resident of Dorchester Walking on Highway 13 Struck
By Car Driven by Alfred Karsten of Abbotsford.
Fred Haas, aged about 40
years, a bachelor who lived near Dorchester, was killed last Thursday afternoon
about 2:30 o’clock on highway 13, two miles north of Unity, when he was hit by a
car driven by Alfred Karsten of Abbotsford. The accident occurred when Haas, who
was walking on the highway, started across the highway into the path of the car
to get a ride with a passing team and wagon driven by Art Weirsig of Colby, the
rig traveling north.
Dr. H. H. Fechtner of Marathon county, the coroner
who was called, said the marks indicated that Haas was about 3 feet onto the
pavement when he was struck by the right front fender of the southbound car. The
coroner said no inquest would be held, since the victim’s death was due to his
own negligence and the accident was unavoidable on the part of the driver. Haas
was carried about 20 feet and suffered a severe skull fracture and badly
fractured right leg.
