Mrs. Frank
VerWeyst, 70, of Stanley, died of a heart attack Sunday evening following shock
and chest injuries received in a two car accident four miles north of Cadott on
Highway 27 at 8:30 that evening, July 23rd, 1961. She passed away after the
accident as she was being lifted into an ambulance.
Mrs. VerWeyst was a
passenger in the car driven by her son, John, 36, who is a rural mail carrier at
Stanley, and had been attending a rural mail carriers’ picnic at Lake Holcombe.
He was headed south on 27 and was struck near the crest of a hill by a
northbound car driven by Nick Gustavich, 49, of Ladysmith. Mr. Gustavich, his
wife, and two children were able to return to their homes after the accident.
Other passengers in the VerWeyst car were John’s wife, Elna, 35, a son
Robert 7, daughter Mary Ellen 5, and his father Frank, who were all taken to the
Chippewa Falls Hospital. John was released after treatment. Both cars were badly
damaged.
