Cool, Della (05 JUL 1868 – 16 SEP 1942)
Funeral Services for Mrs.
Cool Sunday
Mrs. Della Cool, aged 74 years, passed away at her home in
the village at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 after an illness of more than five
years. Mrs. Cool, daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth Schofield, was born at
Boscobel, Wis., July 5, 1868. She came to Spencer when two years of age with her
parents, who settled on a farm in town of Sherman, north and east of Spencer. At
that time there were no roads except one blazed trail leading here from
Neillsville, and Mrs. Cool went to school in her girlhood days through woods,
the blazed trees being her guide and stepped behind trees to avoid meeting the
Indians. She was married to Edward Cool in the town of Sherman in the year 1887
and to this union three children were born, Miss Mamie Cool, who has been her
mother’s constant companion since the death of Mr. Cool in 1925, and a son and
daughter who died in infancy.
Mrs. Cool took care of the telephone
exchange in Spencer between the years 1913 and 1936, after which she accompanied
her daughter, Mamie to Chicago to finish her course at the Moody Bible
institute. She was always active in the Methodist church of Spencer and also in
the Presbyterian churches of Amberg and Aniwa, both churches of which Miss Mamie
supplied as pastor. She has been an invalid partly due to an automobile accident
and throughout these past five years of illness and intense pain she steadily
went on her beautiful quiet way, praying and teaching her beloved Bible to her
many friends. She was a divine inspiration to everyone who came in contact with
her, and to the end prayed for the young and old alike. Her tender love and
compassion for the boys in the Armed forces was one of the uppermost things in
her mind and despite the pain and suffering, was always smiling, cheerful,
always ready to see those who called but always giving her Lord and Master all
the glory.
Funeral services for Mrs. Cool were held in the Methodist
church Sunday, Sept. 20, with the Rev. Ellery Beale, pastor, conducting the
services. He took for his topic the 116th chapter of the book of Psalms and the
15th verse and his entire sermon was typical of the beautiful life of Mrs. Cool.
He read many of her favorite passages of scripture and the three songs by the
choir, “He hideth my Soul,” “I’m Praying for You” and “The Home Over There” were
of her choosing. She was laid to rest in the Spencer cemetery beside her
husband.
The deceased is survived by her daughter, Mamie; one brother,
Albert Schofield of Greenwood, and one sister, Mrs. Ben Hebert of Como, Colo.,
and nieces and nephews. The pall bearers were Geo. Hayward, Eugene McVean, W. W.
Clark, Laurence Driscoll, H. C. Andrews and Earl Pickett and those carrying
flowers were Mesdames H. C. Andrews, W. W. Clark, Eugene McVean, J. L. Driscoll,
Glen Shupe and F. C. Corbett. Those who attended from out of town were Mr. and
Mrs. Albert Schofield, Mr. And Mrs. Byron Schofield and children, Marvin and
Joan, Pierce Schofield and Mrs. Clayton Schofield all of Greenwood, and Mrs.
Runnion of Amberg, and many friends and relatives from the town of Sherman and
Loyal.
