Mrs. Anna Manthe Dies at Marshfield


Had Been Patient In Hospital for Past Two Weeks; Funeral at North Church Wednesday Afternoon.

Mrs. Anna Manthe, aged 64 years, who had been a patient at the hospital in Marshfield for the past two weeks, died there Sunday morning at 8:15 o’clock. The body was brought to the Swarthout Funeral Home in Spencer, and on Tuesday was taken to the family home northwest of Spencer.

Mrs. Manthe, nee Anna Schwantes, was born in Ixonia, Jefferson county, June 12, 1877 and came to Spencer when a girl with her parents, settling on a farm in the town of Brighton, now the Art Schwantes farm. She was married Nov. 11, 1897 to Albert Griepentrog, who was killed in an accident in Spencer Nov. 11, 1914. On Jan. 6, 1916, she married Frank Manthe, and he died July 29, 1939. Surviving are five sons and a daughter by her first marriage, Herbert and Reinhold Griepentrog, both of Marshfield; Albert and Martin Griepentrog, both of Spencer; Oscar Griepentrog of Park Falls, and Mrs. Emery (Joyce Griepentrog) Cook of Marshfield. Also surviving are two brothers, Charles and Herman Schwantes of Minneapolis, and two sisters, Mrs. Albert Rindfleisch of Spencer and Mrs. Arthur Zettler of Nekoosa; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home at 2:45 o’clock and at St. John’s Lutheran church in the town of Brighton at 3 o’clock. Rev. H. C. Hinz, pastor of the church, was in charge of the services, and burial was made in the church cemetery.
