Elmendorf, Val #2 (4 DEC 1862 - 15 AUG 1961)
Val Elmendorf was born at Whitewater, Wis. on Dec. 4, 1862 and passed away
Aug. 15, 1961 at the Marshfield Hospital of a heart ailment and complications of
old age, having reached the ripe old age of 98 years, 7 months and 15 days.
He had been a resident at the Hallanger Hotel, the rest home in Greenwood
until he was taken to the Havenet Rest Home in Owen, having gone to the hospital
several days before his death.
He was a resident of his community all his
life, having owned and operated the farm now owned by Dr. Stuesser about 3/4
miles west of town. There was only wilderness here at the time and a path
through the woods that he used walking to town and back. He carried his supplies
in a pack on his back. He cleared the land and made a farm there.
He was
married to Eliza Jane Alger Oct. 4, 1889, who preceded him in death in 1917.
A daughter Floss, aged 6, and a son Merval, age 10, passed away many years
ago.
His bright disposition won him friends everywhere and he was loved
and liked by all.
People were grieved to hear of his passing to his
Eternal Rest, but he had lived a full life and what more could one ask.
Surviving are three sons: Bernard and Harold, Seattle, Wash., Cletus of Auburn,
Wash., and Mrs. Frank (Maude) Schultze of Thorp. There are 12 grandchildren and
30 great-grandchildren.
Services were conducted at the Thorp Funeral Home
on Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock with the Rev. John Harris of River Falls, and
burial was in the East Thorp Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Jack Conklin,
Erwin Geisler, Ronald Glasshof, Sidney Alger Sr., Harold Hallanger Sr., Harold
Hallanger Jr.
