Mack, Mrs. Walter (1935-1960)
Mrs. W. I.
Mack wrote personal items for the Loyal Tribune for the last time this past week
as she has now retired to take a well earned rest.
Born November 6, 1885
at Caney, Kansas. Mrs. Mack is an active and agile as persons much younger than
her 74 years. Because of a wish "to take things easier" she decided to stop
gathering the club news, personal items and other information for the Loyal
Tribune and two other newspapers as well. For the time being, local and personal
items and club news will be received at the office of the Loyal Tribune, phone
C1 5-3511.
Mrs. Mack is a pioneer resident of Loyal and has served often
in the capacity as local historian. Not only did the Tribune staff refer to her
excellent memory to recall incidents in the past, but many other persons called
on her for all sorts of information.
She arrived in the Spencer area in a
covered wagon at the age of two years. Then shortly afterwards, the family moved
to a log house on the present Oscar Fricke farm. When she was five, the family
moved into Loyal where her dad, Hank Welsh, a four civil war veteran was deputy
sheriff, constable, auctioneer and a general handyman.
It was in 1903 as
a member of the first four year class that she graduated from high school. She
continued her education gathering several college credits through correspondence
courses and taught several years in rural schools.
In 1912, she married
Walter I. Mack and her teaching days were over except for occasional
substituting work. Mack operated a photo finishing business in the city which
flourished until the depression hit. The couple then started a berry farm on the
east side of the city to raise raspberries and the outlook for the family was
just brightening when Mr. Mack passed away.
Mrs. Mack has had a minimum
number of vacations in the past but manages to keep in touch with her children
either with visits to them or their visiting here. Her children are: Mrs. J. a.
(Mildred) Sterr, Safford, Arizona, D. Vance Mack, Okinawa, a representative of
the California-Orient Trading Co.; and twins – Sherrin Mack of Loyal and Mrs.
Mack (Shirley)------Rest of article not available to typist
Thanks to every
one who in the many years that I have been local correspondent for the Loyal
Tribune have given me news items and stories for the paper. Lou Mack
