Overman, Dr. Meric V. (3
April 1907 - 17 December 1966)
The Masonic Temple in Neillsville was
filled Tuesday afternoon for the funeral service of Dr. Meric V. Overman, 59,
widely known Neillsville physician, who died Saturday at his cottage near
Hayward of an apparent heart attack.
Masonic rites were conducted by the
Rev. W. C. Koehler, and burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.
One of the principal movers in construction of Memorial Hospital in
Neillsville, Dr. Overman had gone to his cottage where he expected to meet a
son, Jerry, for skiing at Mt. Telemark over the weekend. Jerry was late in
arriving from the University of Minnesota, where he is a student. So, rather
than to ski that day, Dr. Overman and his son started to put up wood.
Shortly afterward Dr. Overman told his son that he didn’t fell well and went
into the cottage to lie down. With Jerry’s help he took some medication and
asked his son to take him home. Dr. Overman apparently suffered another attack
near the car as they prepared to leave.
Dr. Overman was born April 3,
1907, in Balsam Lake, the son of the late Albert and Rosemound E. (Tuttle)
Overman. He attended schools in Polk County and was graduated from Balsam Lake
High School and River Falls Teachers College (now University). For two years he
taught in the Granton Public Schools before going to the University of Wisconsin
to enter medical school. Following his graduation and internship, he practiced
medicine in Granton with Dr. R. R. Rath, and in Greenwood with Dr. William
Olson.
He established a medical practice in Neillsville in 1942, and a
few years later became associated with Dr. Kenneth Manz, with whom he organized
the Neillsville Clinic.
Dr. Overman was an active member of the
Neillsville Rotary club and other civic organizations. A 32nd degree Mason, he
was affiliated with Neillsville Lodge, No. 163 F. & A. M., Neillsville Chapter,
No. 66, Royal Arch Masons; Neillsville Commandery, No. 36, Knights Templar; and
Zor Shrine of Madison.
On October 13, 1936, he was married in Litzin,
Minn., to the former Evelyn Ericson, who survives. Also surviving are two sons,
Thomas, of Tucson, Ariz., and Jerry; a daughter, Mrs. Donald W. (Kathleen)
Johnson of Neillsville; two grandchildren; and two brothers, Earl of St. Louis,
Mo., and E. A. Overman, a retired army man, of Oslo, Norway.
