Robbery at Big Store (3 NOV
1914)
Tuesday night the Big Store was the scene of a bold robbery when
someone threw a big stone through one of the large front plate glass windows and
stole the box of money which was on display there. The robbery was an
exceptionally bold one and was evidently perpetuated by someone who had
experience in the work for the stone was thrown with sufficient force to break a
clean hole through the window and thus enable the thief to reach in and pick out
the money box. The box itself contained a sum of money upon which customers were
guessing the amount, being called a pyramid cash box. It contained glass sides
and to the casual observer was packed with paper money. Just how much was in the
box is not known, but it is safe to say there was a considerable sum and the
thief made a very profitable haul. The robbery was not discovered until
Wednesday morning when the store was opened.
