Charles Possley, 79, retired cheesemaker, passed away at his home in the
city of Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), Thursday afternoon, Nov. 2nd, 1961, after a
lingering illness.
His passing thus shortens the long list of men, who as
cheesemakers, worked with the farmers in this community where factories dotted
the landscape for miles around.
Mr. Possley was born in St. Anna, Calumet
Co., Wis., on Jan. 11, 1882. He came to Thorp in 1912, and here he helped to
build one of the first cheese factories, (the old Thorp Dairy Co-op) on the
south side of the village, and served as cheesemaker.
He was united in
marriage to Edith Lubner at St. Bernard’s Church here on Jan. 29th, 1913.
Mr. Possley and his family moved to Edwon, Wis. in 1920 where he operated
the cheese factor and later in Boyd and Eau Galle, Wis. He also was financially
interested in factories in Illinois.
The family returned to Thorp in 1929
and Mr. Possley became interest in the new milk plant of the Thorp Dairy Co.
with his brother and operated the cheese factor for many years.
The
deceased served as a trustee on the village board here for a number of years and
was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters and St.
Beranrd’s Holy Name Society.
He is survived by his wife Edith, three
sons, Donald of White hall, Wis., Roman of River Forest, Ill., and James of
Thorp; also two brothers, Nick Possley of Fond du Lac, Wis., and Milton Possley
of Green Bay, Wis., and one sister, Anna Wiskerchen of Pepin, Wis., and nine
grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and six
sisters.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Hebert Hoffman at St.
Bernard’s Church on the 6th, and interment took place in St. Bernard’s Cemetery.

and Harley Hoffman.
