Nicholas, Air Force Capt. Mansel E. (Military -1967)
Air Force Capt.
Mansel E. Nicholas, son in law of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Korth of Neillsville, has
been decorated with his second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) at
Naha AB, Okinawa. Capt. Nicholas received the medal for heroism as a rescue crew
commander on an HU-1 Albatross. Despite fire from enemy forces, he rescued an
injured American pilot. The captain is now assigned at Naha as a member of the
aerospace rescue and recovery service, which flies combat and peacetime air
rescue and aero-medical evacuation missions. He received his commission in 1953,
through the aviation cadet program. A 1950 graduate of Coldwater (Kans.) High
School, Capt. Nicholas attended Fort Hays State College, Hays, Kans., and
Arizona State University. His wife is the former Marilyn Korth. Col. Donald T.
Smith, commander of Pacific aerospace rescue and recovery center, made the
presentation. (I did not have the photo to place it here.)
