On Tuesday morning of this week at an early hour,
Miss Nettie (Laura Jeanette) Welsh died at the age of 82 as a result of old age
complications.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the
Loyal Methodist Church with the Rev. Wendell Bennett officiating. . She will be
buried in the Loyal Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Myre Funeral Home
after Wednesday morning. The body will be taken to the church Thursday noon to
lie in state until the time of services.
Miss Welsh had been a
semi-invalid for a number of years, and although confined to her home for a long
time, she numbered among her visitors former students and other friends from
near and far, so that hardly a week went by without bringing a visitor from a
distant state as well as a number of local friends to visit.
Beyond a
doubt her wide acquaintanceship was the result of the many years she taught in
the rural schools of Clark County and in our local grade and high school.
She spent only a few years of her life outside of this community, and that
during the time she taught at Stevens Point, Abbotsford, St. Croix Falls and
Bothell, Wash.
Miss welsh was born in Cancy, Kan., Sept. 18, 1875, and
the trip to this country at an early age, in company with her parents, was made
in a covered wagon. Early bits of history of this area with names, dates and
other information were at her fingertips as she possessed an unusual memory.
She served as co-correspondent with her sister, Mrs. W.I. Mack, for the
Loyal Tribune in the city for the past quarter century and during these times
she was called on frequently to recall events of the past. Miss Welsh also
served as secretary for the Loyal Cemetery Association for many years and before
her confinement was active in a variety of the activities at the Methodist
Church, of which she was a member.
Miss Welsh undoubtedly held some sort
of a record for membership in the Royal Neighbors of America, with which she was
associated for some 55 years. She was also in the first class to graduate from
the newly established high school in Loyal back in 1898. Her death leaves only
one member of that class alive.
Surviving are her sister, Mrs. W.I. Mack
of Loyal; a brother, William Welsh of Wibaux, Mont.; two nieces, Mrs. John
Fleishman, Billings, Mont., Mrs. J.A. Sterr, Safford, Ariz., and three nephews,
D. Vance Mack, Okinawa, Sherrin Mack, Loyal and Mrs. Mack Kehoe, Menomonee
Falls.
Perhaps some measure of the esteem she held in the hearts of those
close to her can be judged from the action of a group of her friends who
“chipped I” to buy her a television some time ago to help brighten her days.
