Tompkins, Hilda (13
September 1892 - 1 February 1967)
Mrs. Earl (Hilda) Tompkins, 74, a
former resident of rural Greenwood, and for the last six years a resident of
Memorial Home in Neillsville, died here February 1. Funeral services were held
Saturday afternoon from the Georgas Funeral Home. The Rev. Carl Booher of the
Greenwood Methodist Church officiated. Burial was made in the Greenwood City
Cemetery.
Mrs. Tompkins, the former Hilda Bredesen, was born September
13, 1892, in Athens. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and worked as a
telephone operator in Greenwood and Loyal.
On December 28, 1911, she was
married to Earl D. Tompkins in Marshfield. They operated a large farm in the
Town of Eaton. In 1953 they retired from active work and moved to Neillsville.
Mr. Tompkins died in 1959.
After suffering an apparent stroke in 1960,
Mrs. Tompkins entered Memorial Hospital, later being transferred to Memorial
Home.
She is survived by a daughter, Lorraine Tompkins of Owen; and a
son, Nyles, of Osseo. Other survivors are: three sisters, Mrs. Gilbert
(Margaret) Mink of Madison, Mrs. Harry (Jeanette) Johnson of Flint, Mich., and
Mrs. James (Olga) Milton of Neillsville; two brothers, Arthur Bredesen of
Tacoma, Wash., and Einar Pierce of Montana; 10 grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were: Alvin Ehlers, Ted Ampe, Lawrence
Johnson, Hugh Christie, Viv Carteron and Arnold Syth.
Wilfred B. Galstad
sang, “One Sweetly Solemn Thought” and “Saved by Grace,” accompanied by Mrs.
Jess W. Scott.
People from away attending were: Nyle Tompkins, A. G.
Ellwood, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Lautenbach, Mrs. Lois Tompkins and family and Mr.
and Mrs. Jerry Tompkins, all of Osseo; Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Tompkins of Augusta;
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Roehl of Wisconsin Rapids; those from Greenwood were: Mrs.
Andrew Lindner, Walter Stabnow, Mr. and Mrs. Viv Carteron, Arnold Syth, Hugh
Christie, Alvin Ehlers and Leo Stanley; Floyd Christie of Loyal and Mr. and Mrs.
Jim Syth of Jim Falls.
