Lewis, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie (Golden – 26 June 1984)
An open house honoring Leslie and Clara Lewis of Chili, on their golden wedding
anniversary was held June 30 at the Granton Sportsmen’s Club with approximately
400 attending.
A brief program included musical selections by Fern, Delores and Billy Kuester,
Greenwood; Peg Scheel, Minneapolis, Bev. Helm, Chili; and Loretta and Kevin
Grobe, Mason, Mich. A buffet dinner followed and the Tony Haselberger Band
furnished music for an evening of dancing.
Leslie Lewis, the son of Andrew and Elva (Catlin) Lewis, was born December 17,
1913, in Richland Center. Two years later he and his parents moved to Loyal
where he received his education, graduating in 1932 from the Loyal High School.
Mrs. Lewis is the former Clara Sternitzky, daughter of Louis and Martha
(Burdick) Sternitzky of the Town of Lynn. She attended a Lutheran grade school
and Granton High School.
On June 26, 1934, they were united in marriage at the Zion Lutheran Church with
the Rev. Arthur Laesch officiating. Attendants were Amy and Melvin Sternitzky
and Selma and Clarence Sternitzky. (The last three attended the anniversary.)
From 1934 to 1943 the young couple farmed in the Town of Lynn after which they
moved to Detroit where both worked in defense plants. In 1946 they returned to
the Town of Lynn and farmed until 1970. She worked for Weyerhaeuser in
Marshfield for 13 years and also worked in supper clubs in Detroit and the
Granton area. For quite a number of years the Marshfield Motorcycle Club has
held its annual hill climb on their farm.
Both are active members of the Zion Lutheran Church, and she is also a member of
the Lynn Birthday Club. They enjoy playing cards, fishing and traveling.
The couple has two daughters, Mrs. DuWayne (Lois) Ziegler, Redlands, Calif., and
Mrs. Edward (Loretta) Grobe, Mason, Mich. A son, Ronald, died in infancy. There
are also six grandchildren.
Among those attending from a distance in addition to the immediate children were
Dean, Laurie, and Byron Ziegler and Shelly Rae Moody, all from California;
Kevin, Justin and Eddie Grobe, Michigan; Russell and Erline VandeBerg, Nevada;
Eldon, Alice and Scott Nopenger, Illinois; Thearon and Lennie Sternitzky, Wash.;
and Peg and Bob Scheel, Minn.

Tichy, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen (Golden – 26 June 1984)
The Neillsville American Legion Hall was the site on June 30 for the golden
wedding anniversary celebration for Stephen and Margaret Tichy, 116 West
Eleventh St., Neillsville.
Stephen was born on December 7, 1907, to Allois and Frances of Chicago. He
received his education at Meadow View School and then farmed with his brother,
Louis, at Humbird until his marriage.
Margaret was born on November 22, 1912, in Sherbrooke, North Dakota to Fred and
Nellie Newton. She attended Van Horn Elementary School and Humbird High School.
She lived and worked with her parents until marriage.
Steven Tichy and Margaret Newton were married on June 26, 1934, at an Alma
Center Methodist Church. After the 1934 marriage, the couple made their home in
Alma Center for eight years as farmers. From 1942 to 1962, they farmed in the
Greenwood area. During this time, Steve served as a Town of York supervisor. In
1962, the couple moved to Mundelein, Illinois, where Steve worked in
construction and security and Margaret as a cook in a private home. Steve
retired in 1975 and the couple moved to Neillsville two years later.
The couple has three children, son Robert of rural Marshfield, Carlotta of
Pewaukee and Elvina of Rochester, Minnesota. They also have eight grandchildren
and two great grandchildren.
The open house featured decorated tables; a “This is Your Life” program hosted
by son-in-law Richard Thompson; and a dance. Guests came from Illinois,
Minnesota, Colorado, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia and Wisconsin.

Cram, Ernest E. (24 September 1924 - ? 1984) With Flag
Services were held on July 7 from an Oshkosh funeral home for Ernest E. Cram,59.
The deceased was born on September 24, 1924, in Neillsville to Ernest and
Antoinette (Hardy) Cram. On October 17, 1946, he married Bertha Quast in Globe
ceremonies.
Cram was employed by C.R. Meyer and Sons Construction for 33 years. He was also
a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Airborne.
Surviving him, besides his wife and mother, are three daughters, Mrs. Leroy
(Patricia) Ruedinger, Mrs. Philip (Cynthia) Owen and Mrs. Gregory (Janice)
Walker, all of Oshkosh; four sons, Ernest III and Gary, both of Oshkosh, Kenneth
of Butte de Morts and Ervin of Fond du Lac; a sister, Mrs. Floyd Murphy,
Greenwood; a brother, Richard, Neillsville; and ten grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the Konrad-Behlman Funeral Home with burial made
in an Oshkosh cemetery.

Gerlach, Emma M. (6 November 1893 – 8 July 1984)
Emma M. Gerlach, 90, of 153 East Sixth St., Neillsville, died on Sunday evening,
July 8, at Neillsville Memorial Hospital.
The deceased was born on November 6, 1893, in Greenwood to William and Ann
(Herian) Vollrath. She received her education in Greenwood schools and graduated
at the age of 18 from Wausau Normal School. She then taught at schools in the
Greenwood, Granton and Thorp areas.
On May 30, 1917, she married William J. Gerlach in Greenwood ceremonies. The
couple then operated a cheese factory in Greenwood until 1926 when they moved to
Osseo to operate another cheese factory. In 1936 they moved to the Town of
Weston where they farmed until retiring in 1946. The couple then moved in to
Neillsville. She was a member of the United Church of Christ.
Surviving her is a son, Edward, Chippewa Falls; a daughter, Mrs. Lyman
(Emmeline) Johnson, New London; a sister, Ida Speich, Neillsville; seven
grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her
husband on January 1, 1964; four brothers, George, Ernest, John and Bernard; and
two sisters, Clara and Margaret.
Services were held on Wednesday afternoon, July 11, from the Neillsville United
Church of Christ with the Rev. Alwyn York officiating. Burial was made in the
Neillsville City Cemetery; the Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.

Kernz, Mary (28 February 1897 – 11 July 1984)
Funeral services were held on Saturday morning, July 14, for former Town of York
farmwife Mary Kernz. The Rev. Joseph Henseler officiated at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church rites with the Gesche Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial was
made in the parish cemetery. Grandsons were pallbearers.
Mrs. Kernz, 87, died on Wednesday, July 11, at Neillsville Memorial Home where
she had been a resident for the past eight years.
The deceased was born on February 28, 1897, in Biwabik, Minnesota, to Mr. and
Mrs. John Kovach. She received her education in Minnesota schools. On August 7,
1917, she married Joseph Kernz, Jr., in Gbeen, Minnesota, ceremonies.
The couple farmed for ten years then moved to Milwaukee. In 1931 they moved to
Plainfield, where they farmed for four years. In 1935, they moved to the Town of
York where he continued to farm until retiring in 1968. They then moved into
Neillsville. She was a member of St. Mary’s parish and its Council of Catholic
Women.
Surviving her are three sons, Joseph of Marshfield, Rudolph of Loyal and Tony of
Neillsville; five sisters, Agnes, Helen, Josephine, Jenny and Anie, all of
Minnesota; 24 grandchildren; 34 great grandchildren; and one great-great
grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband (March 28, 1977); a son,
Phillip; a sister, four brothers and three grandchildren.

Krause, Heidi M. (16 November 1962 – 15 July 1984)
Heidi M. Krause, 21, took her own life on Sunday, July 15, in her home in
Merrillan.
She was born on November 16, 1962, in the U.S. Army Hospital in Stuggart,
Germany, to Harlan and Marilyn (Kuester) Carder. The family moved to San
Antonio, Texas in 1965. They also live in Colorado Springs and moved to Denver
in 1968.
She was seriously injured in an auto accident which killed her father on Mary 8,
1969. The family moved to Viroqua in June 1969. She attend Viroqua High School
and then married Scott Krause in La Crosse on May 1, 1982. They lived in La
Crosse and Black River Falls before moving to Merrillan.
Survivors include her mother; two brothers, Harlan of Viroqua and Allen of
Austin, Texas; a sister Kathryn Carder-Johnson; and her maternal grandparents,
Henry and Mabel Kuester.
Services were held Thursday afternoon in the Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua
with the Rev. Keith Garness officiating. Burial was in the Viroqua Cemetery.

Park, William A. (11 October 1895 – 7 July 1984)
William A. Park, 88, of Eau Claire died on Saturday, July 7, at Eau Claire’s
Luther Hospital.
The deceased was born on October 11, 1896, in Yankton, South Dakota. At the age
of one year, he and his parents moved to Salem. On October 14, 1913, he married
Edith Clark in Waukegan, Illinois ceremonies. They farmed there for a year and
then moved to the Withee area to farm and haul milk. The couple remained in that
community until retiring in 1967 and then moved to Eau Claire.
Surviving him is a daughter Helen Dresdow, Eau Claire; two grandchildren,
Russell Dresdow of La Crosse and Jean Lantz of Eau Claire; five great
grandchildren; and two step-great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
The Prock Funeral Home of Eau Claire was in charge of July 10 funeral
arrangements.

Sydorowicz, Victor J. (22 December 1927 – 2 July 1984)
Funeral services were held on Thursday morning, July 5, from the Gesche Funeral
Home in Neillsville for Victor J. Sydorowicz, 56. Mr. Sydorowicz, who made his
home at Rt. 4 Neillsville, died on Monday morning, July 2, after suffering what
was believed a heart attack.
The deceased was born on December 22, 1927, in Neillsville to Nicholas and
Pauline (Goska) Sydorowicz. After his education he lived with his parents and
farmed in the Town of Weston for many years. He later worked for Nelson Muffler
in Neillsville for ten years, retiring in 1983. He never married. He was a
member of St. Mary’s parish.
Surviving him is a sister, Mrs. Karl (Monica) Ranchau, Milwaukee; and three
brothers, Frank of Milwaukee, Charles of Menomonie Falls and Peter of Grand
Prairie, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John
and Nick.
The Rev. Joseph Henseler officiated at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church services
with burial made in the parish cemetery. The Gesche Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements. Pallbearers were Joseph, Frank, Charles and Peter Sydorowicz
and Chris and Ben Ranchau.
