Mattson, Donald
J. (Military News - 1967)
Three Neillsville residents returned late last
week from the west coast where they were present as their son and brother,
Commander Donald J. Mattson, received his first destroyer command.
Present for the event were Mr. and Mrs. John Mattson of Neillsville, parents of
the commander, and Mrs. Ellis (Toddy) Wall, a sister.
Commander Mattson
is a graduate of Neillsville High School, and has been a career navy officer
since December, 1952, following his graduation from Wisconsin State University -
River Falls, in June, 1951.
His ship is the Moore, which set sail shortly
after the transfer ceremonies at San Diego, Calif., for Pearl Harbor, Honolulu,
Hawaii, and eventual service in support of the Vietnam War.
Prior to
taking command of the U. S. S. Moore, Commander Mattson was assigned to the
CONCRUDES-PAC staff as automatic data processing and project officer. He is
married to the former Jean Maes of Monterey, Calif., and has six children. The
Mattsons reside in San Diego.
