Smith, Carl R. (2 March 1901 - 15 May 1967)
Private funeral services are being held today (Thursday) from the Georgas
Funeral Home for Carl R. Smith, 66, of Rt. 2, Neillsville who died Monday at his
farm home in the Town of Pine Valley. Burial will be made in the West Lawn
Cemetery in Augusta.
He apparently had died of a gunshot wound. The body
was found in a bed in the farm home about 7 a.m. Monday by Mrs. Smith. A .22
calibre rifle lay nearby. Coroner Robert Lulloff said Smith had taken his own
life.
Mr. Smith was born March 2, 1901, in Jackson County. He attended
schools there and did farm work. He had been a resident of Clark County since
1945, living first at Humbird and moving to the Neillsville area in 1950. For
the last 10 years he had lived in Pine Valley.
Mr. Smith had been
employed at Short’s Fur Farm until the first part of this year, retiring then
due to poor health. He had been hospitalized recently and returned home, Friday
prior to his death.
He was married November 24, 1927, to the former
Esther Martin in Augusta.
Survivors include his wife; and six children:
Earl of Neillsville, Carl Jr., of Vesper, Martin of Medford, Mrs. Ervin (Arlys)
Knoop of Neillsville, Kenneth of Stevens Point and Gordon of Oshkosh. Other
survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Phillip (Alice) Livermore of Merrill, and Mrs.
George (Cecelia) Gorkowski of Fairchild; a brother, Herman Smith of Fairchild;
and 14 grandchildren.
