Witte Store Robbed (2 JUL 1917)

Monday night thieves entered the H.C. Witte store and helped themselves to whatsoever of the goods as most appealed to them. They gained entrance first by breaking out a window light on the south side and getting into the warehouse. From the warehouse the first man entered the flour shed where he opened an outside door to make more easy his exit and we expect here he admitted his comrades. There was much mute evidence to show it to be the work of several rascals. The cash register and safe were gone through but little or no money was found in either. Shoes were taken and old pair left and presumably a hat was taken, as an old one, probably worn by one of the fellows, was found in the warehouse. Cheese was eaten and the consumers teeth marks distinctly cut into a piec, left int eh box. Sweet chocolate disappeared in large quantities, but just what was taken is not definitely known. The first knowledge of the burglary was had when Mr. Witte went to open the sore Tuesday morning. Sheriff Hewett was summoned from Neillsville and arrived here within the hour of receiving the summons, but the thieves, having at least 6 hours start, haven’t as yet been captured.
