James F. Sparr, age 89, of Marshfield, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2011 at Golden Living Center – Three Oaks in Marshfield. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday June 3, 2011 at the Hillside Cemetery. Pastor Kevin Buchanan of the First Presbyterian Church, Marshfield will officiate. The American Legion Post 54 will conduct military Honors. The Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, Marshfield is assisting the family with arrangements.
James was born April 21, 1922 in Marshfield, the son of Charles and Jane (Wilcox) Sparr.
He graduated from Marshfield Senior High School in 1940 and from UW River Falls in 1948.
James was married to Nelda D. Stokes and the couple later divorced.
Mr. Sparr entered the US Army on June 3, 1943 and was honorably discharged on October 25, 1945. During WWII while serving in Belgium, James became a POW and later escaped. He was awarded the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal.
Mr. Sparr taught High School at Rapid River, Michigan, Denmark and Necedah Wisconsin and served as principal at Humbird High School. In 1967 he accepted a position with Brandl Trucking Inc. where he worked until retiring in 1983.
James was an avid Marshfield Tigers, Badgers and Packers fan. He also enjoyed reading and spent many hours at the Marshfield Public Library. Jim was a friendly person who enjoyed meeting and talking with people of all ages. He also enjoyed walking and frequently walked up and down Central Avenue.
A son, Charles Sparr, Zumbrota, Minnesota and a niece, Doris Hagen of Onalaska, survives him. His caregiver and a nephew he was especially close to, William Sparr of Tomahawk further survives.
A daughter, Florence, sister, Kathryn and brother, John, preceded James in death.
